You did the right thing. For other makers that will find this Question, some more details on how to clean up. It is in the documentation of the Email Connector. And scroll down for a tip.
Remove any existing email modules (IMAP/POP3 or Email Module with Templates).
Check for and remove orphaned JAR files from any old email modules in the userlib subdirectory (for example, javax.mail-1.6.2.jar and activation-1.1.jar).
Clean the deployment directory before running the app.
And I want to point out a great tool, Papercut, (opensource) you can install on your local client that acts as an SMTP server. It allows you to read all the emails you send out directly. When setting up the Email Connector and it asks for a password, you can fill in any password, but you can not leave it empty.
