DataHub is not required to integrate Mendix apps, either with other Mendix apps or applications built in other technologies. It is an extension to the Mendix platform that could make life easier for developers, especially citizen developers.
It makes life easier by enabling ExternalEntities in Studio, which makes setting up integrations really easy. There are a few limitations, however. Currently, DataHub only supports OData services and only OData read requests. If you want to write data to another system (typically using POST requests), DataHub currently doesn't help you.
Although the current functionality is rather limited, the roadmap looks promising, with support for additional operation types, so that you can also easily write data and additional types of integrations, such as non-OData REST integrations.
Finally, a major selling point of DataHub is the fact that all these data sets are accessible from a single place, which can be curated. Many larger clients I've worked for have an API gateway that fulfills this role. In this regards, DataHub is a competing offering to an API gateway, with very little additional value. So if your organisation already has an API gateway, the added value of DataHub seems low.
For example, you can use Data Hub if you want to use data from other applications inside your application.
If you want to know more about Data Hub or anything else, you can find a lot of interesting information in the Docs, here you have the link https://docs.mendix.com/data-hub/.
Hope this helps!
