Restoring data from SQL Server database to Mendix entities

What is the best way to load data into Mendix entities from a SQL Server database or a SQL Server backup file (.bak)? I tried creating xml data files from the SQL Server DB but wasn't successful in creating data files that maintain the table relationships and then load them to similar Mendix entities. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
